Great Escapes

Adventures Past
McMinnville, Oregon 2010

We spent a condensed weekend between Portland and McMinnville tasting the culinary and wine offerings as well as a little grilling of our own.

Saturday breakfast was French style, yellow fluffy omelettes at Bijou Cafe (the picture is of Reilly's mushroom and cheese omelette with potatoes and baguette), followed by ice cream for lunch at Serendipty in McMinnville. For dinner we hit up the McMennamins Rooftop Bar for a vegetarian affair of hummus and pizza.

The area we were in is a big wine area with many vineyards. We visited the Amity Vineyard and Tasting Room where the view was phenomenal looking out over the rest of the valley and rolling farm hills. They had a very delicious reisling. I also picked up a bottle of pinot gris from the Evergreen Vineyards.

Sunday morning was protein heavy with a steak (100% grass fed tenderloin from Thundering Hooves) and eggs breakfast that we grilled ourselves while camping at Champoeg Heritage State Park. We also had hashed potatoes (left overs from my pea and potatoe cakes) with grilled french baguette and mushrooms. I couldn't finish my plate we made so much food!

And because we were camping we of course indulged in the obligatory smore making. We used Theo's Vanilla Milk Chocolate bar from Fremont for a more local, fair-trade sustainable chocolate choice.

On the way back home we stopped in Portland again where we enjoyed VooDoo donuts (Mango Tango for me and Butterfinger for Reilly) and lunch at Deschutes Brewery.

Boston and Washington D.C. 2010

We spent a long weekend this spring visiting Boston for the first time where I made sure to try lobster (so good and way better than I've ever had on the West Coast) at Legal Seafoods as well as a required stop into Dunkin Donuts which are like our Starbucks in Seattle - literally every other block!

Other recommended food stops that we hit up were Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Pizzeria Regina and The Warren Tavern.

We ended our trip with a stop in Washington D.C. to visit Reilly's best friend, Shawn, and his growing family. Shawn took us to Ben's Chili Bowl, a D.C. landmark and one of the locations that President Obama made sure to hit up which serves just about every combination of chili you can think of whether just a plain bowl, over your hot dog, a burger or on your fries.

Whistler, Canada 2010

This past January I was fortunate to spend a week in Whistler, British Columbia with my brother and sister-in-law and their friends for a week of snowboarding. The snow and views were absolutely amazing and you could find good powder all week long.

We all pitched in for a fabulous townhome and actually ended up cooking in most nights including delicious turkey chilli, turkey spinach feta burgers, and fish tacos.

Whistler Village is fun to explore and shop in and has a diverse range of restaurants. None of them totally impressed me but my favotie part was the Cow's ice cream shop and their home made waffle cones (which I bought just so I could take back to the townhome and eat with some ice cream that we had in the freezer. Hope to do another snowcation next year too!

California Christmas 2009

We spent Christmas in Placerville with family and then went up to South Lake Tahoe to kick off the ski season. It was the first time back on my snowboard since injuring myself last season and I will admit, I cried! But my nerves did finally calm down and I continued to get better.

My favorite food memory from this trip was at the Tahoe Grill. I found a delicious cabernet sauvignon that had a delightful sweetness to it from Sycamore Lane in Napa Valley and an amazing lamb dish. Yum!
